In this chapter: Jaeho moving along!!! And a bit of Yoosu, if you squint 8D

chapter three )

Junsu pulled the curtains shut gently, taking care not to let any harsh crack of sunlight filter its way into the room. The room’s occupant was asleep, the small, thin chest moving up and down weakly, just a fraction behind the rhythm of the beeping of the heart monitor at the side of the bed. As Junsu bent down to re-arrange the blankets to better cover the sleeping boy, his eyelids fluttered open.

“…m-mom?”

Junsu reached over to brush the younger boy’s hair gently away from his face. “Your mom had something important at work, Junjin. But she promised that she’ll be back later in time to have dinner with you.”

“Oh.” Junjin shifted around, trying to prop himself up. “Sorry to bother you, Junsu hyung, but could I have some…”

Junsu noticed him eyeing the jug of water on the bedside table. “Sure.” Grabbing a glass, he quickly poured some water and placed it within the boy’s frail fingers. He leaned over to adjust the bed so that it would tilt at an angle, making it easier for him to sit up.

“Thanks.” The boy quietly sipped the water, looking over to the empty bed next to his. “Donghwan went home already?”

Junsu’s heart broke a little when he noticed the sad, longing look in the boy’s eyes. “Yeah. He got discharged this morning, but you were still asleep. He didn’t want to wake you, so he left you a note.” Junsu reached into the drawer of the bedside table, handing the boy a small square of paper, decorated with messy handwriting and scribbles.

Junjin clutched the note, chuckling as he read it. “His handwriting really sucks!” He turned the paper around to read the script written upside-down before he smiled. “He said he’ll visit soon, and he’ll bring his entire collection of manga.”

Junsu ruffled his hair affectionately, grinning. “I’m sure he will. And he’ll make this ward so noisy that we’ll have to lock him in the toilet again to shut him up.”

The boy nodded, trying his hardest to suppress a yawn without the nurse noticing but failing. Junsu took the empty glass from him, setting it next to the jug of water. “Alright, you better get some rest so you can spend some time with your mum later. I’ll wake you up when she gets back, alright?”

Junjin’s eyes were already half-shut, the fatigue that was a result of his disease already taking over his body. “Okay…”

Junsu smiled, watching as the boy’s eyes close before he bit his lip, turning to look at Kibum, whom he knew was standing at the door. He walked out of the ward silently, and the both of them made their way down the corridor together.

“So…” Kibum began quietly. “What did you tell him?”

“That his mother had to go back to work.” Kibum watched as Junsu’s teeth abused his lower lip. He knew that the nurse hated lying to children. “I couldn’t possibly tell him that his mom just lost her job and she’s currently running around Seoul trying to find enough money to pay for his chemotherapy right?” Junsu looked at Kibum.

“You did the right thing. I’m hoping that the chemotherapy will work well for him, but it’s too early to tell.”

“I’m just worried for Mrs. Lee though,” Junsu looked lost in his thoughts. “She’s been looking so haggard these past few days, and she broke down in the corridor when she found out that she lost her job.”

Kibum nodded. “It’s not an easy burden to bear. Junjin’s only eleven, and the chances of having Ewing’s sarcoma is only two in a million…I think it must have come as a shock to her.”

Junsu was quiet for a while. “I bet his father doesn’t even know that his own son is ill.”

Kibum drew in a breath. “Junsu…”

“What kind of a father would not bother about the well-being of his own family?”

Kibum clasped Junsu’s shoulder tightly. “We have to be professional, okay? Try not to get too emotionally involved, it’ll affect your work.” He watched as Junsu’s jaw tightened. “We’re supposed to be having lunch with Shiwon and Changmin: I’ve arranged to meet them at the cafeteria.”

Junsu shook his head, as if trying to rid himself of all his negative thoughts before he smiled. “Okay. I need to stop by my hyung’s shop for a while first…” He looked a little sheepish. “I’ve got no money for lunch again…”

Rounding the corner, the two men entered the familiar-looking shop, Junsu bounding up to his hyung in happiness, his earlier seriousness all seemingly forgotten. Kibum smiled. The mere sight of Jaejoong could do wonders when Junsu was upset.

“Hyuunnnnnnnggggg~!” Jaejoong looked up from his floral arrangements, only to be hugged heartily by an unidentified blob of white.

“Junsu!” Jaejoong laughed, patting his younger brother gently on the head. “Having your break now?”

Junsu nodded, grinning. “Yeah, Kibum and I were just heading out for lunch.”

Kibum raised his hand in greeting. “Hey hyung.”

Jaejoong nodded, smiling. “Hey.” He frowned mockingly at Junsu. “Are you blackmailing him or something? Why did he ever agree to have lunch with you?”

Junsu whacked his hyung playfully. “Hyung! Don’t be mean! You’re getting as bad as that Park Yoochun!”

“Park Yoochun?” Jaejoong raised his eyebrows. “What about him again?”

“It’s nothing.” Junsu shook his head, his strawberry-blond hair sweeping gently over his eyes. “He’s a jerk. What else is new?”

Jaejoong shot a look at Kibum over his brother’s shoulder. Kibum shook his head, a light smile playing over his lips.

Junsu’s stomach rumbled loudly.

“Whoa!” Jaejoong patted Junsu’s stomach. “Weren’t the pancakes this morning enough for you? Keep this up and you’ll be turning into a Changmin!” He laughed as Junsu made a face. “You two should get going, the cafeteria’s gonna get really crowded soon.”

Junsu suddenly found his shoes very interesting. “About that, hyung…”

Jaejoong sighed knowingly. “No money again, Su?”

Kibum covered his smile with his hand as Junsu nodded pitifully.

Jaejoong reached behind the counter in a resigned manner, handing Junsu a few crisp notes. “When are you going to learn that spending your money on colouring books and crayons for the children is not the best idea? You’re gonna end up starving one day…”

Junsu beamed as he took the money from Jaejoong. “Thanks, hyung! And no,” he paused here to press a light, happy kiss on Jaejoong’s cheek. “…I won’t starve. Not with you here, anyway.”

Jaejoong raised an eyebrow. “And if I’m feeling particularly mean?”

“As if you could ever be mean to me!” Junsu stuck out his tongue. “You love me too much!”

Junsu grabbed Kibum’s hand, dragging him out of the shop before Jaejoong had a chance to retaliate. Kibum barely had time to wave goodbye before he was whisked down the corridor to the cafeteria.

They spotted Shiwon sitting alone at a table with a tray in front of him, a worried look upon his face. He waved them over, and they quickly weaved their way through the tables to join him.

Kibum looked around. “Where’s Changmin?”

“Still ordering his food.” Shiwon winced visibly, burying his face into his hands. “Why did I agree to eat lunch with him?”

Kibum hid a smile, raising one of his eyebrows. “You don’t have much of a choice, since you’re both working in the same department. And he’s not that bad, once you get used to it.”

“I saw the cafeteria lady’s face paling when she saw him coming.”

Junsu laughed. “Why should she be upset? She earns more because of him!”

Shiwon groaned. “But he causes a jam in the queue because he orders so much! I just-” His sentence remained unfinished as his face turned as white as the rice on his tray. “Here he comes.”

Junsu and Kibum turned around only to see none other than Shim Changmin, who had mastered the art of balancing three food-laden trays at one go. He spotted them, and he managed a sort of half-wave. “Hyung-deul!”

Junsu rushed forward, helping his dong saeng with one of his trays which was balancing precariously on Changmin’s lower arm. “Changmin-ah! What happened to that trolley that one of your patient’s gave you as a present? Isn’t using that easier than balancing all this food?”

“Of course I used it!” Changmin grinned, setting his two trays on the table. Shiwon inched away slowly. “There it is!”

Kibum looked on with amusement as he spotted a young nurse pushing a trolley through the crowd with much difficulty. Changmin beamed when she finally managed to reach their table, eagerly reaching out for the trolley. “Thanks, noona! I couldn’t have managed without you.”

The nurse blushed. “It’s ok, Changmin-ah! You don’t have to thank me!”

“But I do!” Changmin flashed an award-winning smile, bowing slightly. “Thank you so much!” He waved as she walked away, cupping her cheeks in embarrassment.

Shiwon groaned. “I can’t believe you manipulated her into pushing the trolley for you!”

Changmin gave him an innocent look. “Manipulated? Me?” He began unloading his trays happily. “I didn’t have to say anything! She was the one who offered to help me!” He narrowed his eyes at Shiwon. “And you were the one who abandoned me in the queue…”

Kibum shot him a wry look. “You didn’t have to say anything. You gave her the hungry puppy look, didn’t you?”

Changmin patted the now empty trolley, grinning at Kibum as he sat himself down. “You know me too well.” He clapped his hands together. “Time to dig in!”

Shiwon and Junsu gulped simultaneously and shifted their trays away from the young doctor with unnatural speed.

~*~

Yoochun leaned against the wall, watching as a smiling figure carrying a large bouquet of tulips walked towards him. He gave a knowing smile. “Hyung.”

“Yoochun-ah!” Yunho waved at him with the flowers, causing a stray leaf to fall haphazardly onto the floor. “He smiled at me again!”

He smiles at EVERY customer, hyung. Yoochun decided to keep his thoughts to himself, choosing to humour his hyung instead. “Really?”

“Yeah!” Yunho brought the flowers to his nose, breathing in their scent blissfully, closing his eyes. When he opened his eyes, Yoochun could have sworn on the spot that they sparkled. “Let’s go to the cafeteria, Yoochun-ah! I’m starving!”

Yoochun had to widen his strides in order to keep up with his hyper hyung, and was nearly panting for breath by the time they reached the cafeteria. They watched with amusement as Changmin struggled between waving them over and slurping up ramen, surrounded by his usual mountain of food. Yunho ran over immediately, greeting the people at the table enthusiastically, and Yoochun was about to follow him when he noticed an unwelcome face at the same table.

Kim Junsu! Damn it, must he be everywhere!?

“Yoochun hyung!” Shiwon waved at him, shooting Changmin a look of mild disgust as he wolfed down a particularly large piece of kimchi. “What are you standing there for? Come over!”

Yoochun grumbled a bit, walking over with an obvious reluctance, deliberately avoiding the gaze of the one he wanted to avoid. He sat himself beside Yunho even though the seat beside Junsu remained empty, leaving Shiwon and Junsu seating on one side of the table and Kibum, Changmin, Yunho and Yoochun seating on the other. An awkward silence fell over the table, with Changmin remaining the only half-oblivious one. As he paused to chew his food, he groaned at the sight of Yunho’s flowers.

“Hyung, not again-oof!”

Junsu looked confused. “Are you alright, Min?”

“Yeah,” Changmin rubbed his foot gingerly, trying to smile in spite of his pain. He shot Yunho a look when Junsu turned back to his food.

“What was that for!?”

“You know better than to talk about that when his brother is here!” Yunho hissed back.

Changmin grumpily shoved two trays of food to Yunho and Yoochun. “Here, I bought your share.”

“Yunho hyung?” Junsu spoke tentatively, causing Yunho to jump. “Did you buy the flowers from my brother’s shop?”

“Oh?” Yunho suddenly realized that he was still clutching the flowers tightly in his arms. “These?”

“Yeah,” Junsu smiled. “That arrangement looks like something done by my brother.”

“Your brother is very talented!” Yunho blurted happily, his face flushed. “My mother loves his flowers!”

Changmin snorted into his food before he gave a pained groan. Yunho’s smile remained as bright as a 1000-watt light bulb, giving no sign that he had just stepped on Changmin’s toe.

As the conversation continued between his traitorous hyung and Kim Junsu, and Changmin, Shiwon and Kibum were lost in their food and small talk, for a moment, Yoochun felt a little left out.

~*~

Changmin groaned in frustration as he heard the springs on his bed creaking when someone flopped down on it. He swiveled around on his chair in annoyance, removing his glasses and rubbing his face tiredly.

“What do you want now, hyung?” He looked at Yunho, who was lying on his back, looking at him upside-down. He glanced at the pink bunny in Yunho’s arms. “You’re gonna get in trouble for that, you know.”

“I don’t care.” Yunho pouted, hugging the bunny even tighter. “Yoochun deserves it.”

Changmin pinched his nose. “What did he do now?”

“He’s angry about something, but he’s not talking about it!” Yunho wrapped his hands around the bunny, making strangling motions. “He’s playing that stupid pokémon game on his DS-lite again, and he’s yelling at the top of his voice.”

A voice drifted down the corridor. “NO, Charmander, WAKE UP! Don’t bloody sleep NOW, you pig-head!”

Changmin shrugged. “Everyone has different methods of relieving stress.”

“Just like I have my own…” Yunho looked darkly at the beady-eyed pink bunny. Changmin momentarily feared for its life, before he realized that it was never alive to begin with, turning back to his laptop to type quietly.

“Changmin…”

“What?”

“Do you think Jaejoong would ever like me?”

“If he’s like any other human being on earth and likes money, then yes. You’re practically spending your entire salary on flowers.”

Piku the pink bunny found his way to the back of Changmin’s head, followed by Yunho’s indignant cry. “Min~!”

“You’re a good guy, hyung. Everyone knows it. Why wouldn’t he like you?”

“But…” Yunho wriggled his way under Changmin’s blankets. “Do you think he has someone else already?”

So that’s what he’s worried about. “That is a possibility. But I don’t think so.” Changmin turned around to find his hyung wrapped with his blanket, his face peeking out little-red-riding-hood style. “I could check with Junsu hyung if you like. Or you could ask Kibum hyung to ask Junsu hyung, it’s probably easier that way, since they work in the same department.”

“Do you think he remembers who I am already?”

Changmin rolled his eyes. “If the daily visits to his shop for 2 weeks didn’t drill your face into his brain, he would have to be blind. Of course he knows who are already.”

Yunho rolled about in the blankets until he resembled a particularly fat caterpillar.

Changmin whacked him. “Oi. My bed better be back in its pristine condition when you leave this room. When are you gonna ask him out?”

The other man blushed heavily. “Ask him out!?”

“You know, you eventually have to move on with the dating process before you reach a stage where you’re almost married, and then comes adoption-”

“Hold on!” Yunho wailed before he rolled off the bed with a loud “thump!”. He emerged from under the bed, his hair all ruffled. “That’s too fast!”

“YUNHOOOOOOOOO HYUUNNGGGGGGGG!” An angry roar was heard from the bedroom next door. “WHERE’S PIKU!?”

“Fast?” Changmin smirked. “You’ll need all the speed you can get.”

~*~

“What’s that burning smell- JUNSU!” Jaejoong rushed into the kitchen. “You ruined the chicken!”

“Hmm?” Junsu replied absent-mindedly before he noticed the charred remains of the meat on the frying pan, his eyes widening. “SHIT!!!”

Jaejoong sighed, gesturing for him to move aside as he cut the gas to the stove, pulling the frying pan out of his younger brother’s hand. “Why were you so distracted?” He studied the pitiful state of the pieces of chicken. “This must have been burning for a good minute or two…”

Junsu shrugged sheepishly, leaning against the kitchen counter. “I was just thinking of…stuff.”

He watched as his older brother used a large metal fork to scrape off the burnt remains from the frying pan. “Oh? Like what?”

“Just stuff.” Junsu was telling the truth. His thoughts had been wandering all over the place: about Junjin’s irresponsible father, about Changmin’s eating habits, about Yunho hyung’s obsession with buying flowers for his mother, about Park Yoochun…

Hold on. ABOUT PARK YOOCHUN!?

Jaejoong looked up only to watch his younger brother rush madly to put his head under the tap, letting the water slosh over his head. “Junsu…”

“Yeah?” Junsu turned off the tap, shaking his wet hair.

“Sometimes I really worry about you.”

“Why should you be?” Junsu grabbed a kitchen towel, using it to get rid of the excess water that clung to his hair. A thought sprang to his mind. “Neh, hyung, what do you think of Yunho hyung?”

“Yunho?” Jaejoong placed the now empty frying pan into the sink, squeezing some detergent onto the washing sponge. “As in Jung Yunho? The paramedic?”

“Yeah. What do you think of him?”

“He’s…” Jaejoong trailed off, trying to organize his thoughts. “I can tell he’s a nice guy.” A slight tell-tale blush settled on the high cheek bones.

Junsu fought hard not to grin. “Aaaaaand?”

“And he has a nice sense of humour. Friendly when he begins to warm up to people, but polite when he needs to be-” Jaejoong noticed Junsu smiling away, and his eyes widened innocently. “What?”

“You like him, don’t you?”

“Wha-” Jaejoong fought to maintain his composure. “I do not!”

“Don’t worry, hyung.” Junsu plopped himself onto a chair, propping his chin up on his arm and looking at his brother cheekily. “I think he feels the same way.”

“Don’t be silly.” Jaejoong scrubbed the frying pan furiously, trying to control his blush. “He only comes to the shop because he’s buying flowers for his mom-”

“I can’t think of a mom who would want flowers EVERYDAY,” Junsu laughed. “I think he’s using it as an excuse to see you!”

Jaejoong stopped in mid-scrub, before he scrubbed the pan even harder. “Su, he’s just a customer! And I hardly know him!”

“Aaah, but he’s a tall and good-looking customer!” Junsu smirked with satisfaction as Jaejoong nearly dropped the soapy frying pan onto the floor. “He’s really not a bad catch, hyung!”

Jaejoong quietly rinsed the pan with water before setting it to dry at the side. He sighed, turning around to face his younger brother before he reached forward and pinched his cheeks.

“And how do you expect me to have time to date when I have to take care of you? You can’t even cook a simple dish properly!”

“I’m not a kid anymore! I can take care of myself!” Junsu protested, before his stomach growled loudly.

Jaejoong smiled. “Right.” He strode into the living room, picking up the cordless and tossing it to Junsu. “You owe me pizza for ruining dinner.”

Junsu scowled, before he gave in to his stomach and punched the buttons on the phone.

End of chapter three.

a/n: yay an update!!!! Finally!!!!

I am really sorry that this took so long. No excuses once again!!! It was plain procrastination. And once I procrastinate, it usually ends up in writer’s block, which leads to more procrastination @_@

In this chapter I tried to make the Jaeho move faster ^^ it’s quite obvious isn’t it?? But Yoosu will still take some time :D Nevertheless, it’s moving along!!!

Junjin may or may not play an important role…I’m still contemplating on whether I should make things complicated for myself by making the plot more complicated =_= hahaha!!! *gets killed by Shinhwa fans*

Even though I mentioned earlier that Changmin is 25 and that the ages of everyone else would be using his as a marker, I’ve decided not to restrict the ages ^^ Because some of them would end up too old -_- that means you can imagine them to be any age you want!!!! Heheheh. The power of fiction.

Those who have been friending this account of mine, thank you so much! But it would be highly appreciated if you just drop a short comment (something like ‘friending you!’ would be fine) it’s a little weird if I’m suddenly friended and I’ve never heard of your username before ^^;;;

Comments are loved!!! <333
